From the same company that produces Filtrete air filters comes the 8511 Plus Particulate 3M N95 Respirator, which boasts a minimum filtration efficiency of 95% against solid and liquid aerosols not containing oil. It is government approved and NIOSH approved to N95.

Though little is known as to the benefits of wearing masks or respirators to control the spread of pandemic flu and sickness (such as the H1N1 virus, aka Swine Flu), the Center for Disease Control notes that 3M respirators are designed to protect against very small particles, which could contain viruses. The CDC also notes that you may consider wearing a respirator if you are surrounded by sick people, or taking care of a sick person at home.

These 3M respirators are not just for disease prevention, nor should they be known as a "swine flu mask". This 3M respirator is also ideally-suited for use in construction trades that work in high heat or humidity. It protects against particles from grinding, sanding, sweeping and bagging, in addition to pollen or minerals, such as coal, iron, flour, metal or wood.

The 8511 3M respirator features 3M's patented Cool Flow Exhalation Valve, which allows exhaled heat and humidity to escape from the respirator. The result is a cool, dry mask that is ideal for longer jobs or extended respirator use.

This respirator is not to be used with gases, vapors, aerosols, asbestos, arsenic, cadmium or lead. It does not supply oxygen.
